#Faceoftheweek – Christina Carmel

July 5, 2023

Christina Carmel is a UK-based Ghanaian known for her vibrant and easy-going personality within the music industry. Born and raised in the UK to Ghanaian parents, she hails from the Fante tribe in Cape Coast. Christina’s educational journey took her through private school in the UK before pursuing studies in children development and education at college. Later, she attended Kingston University, where she studied psychology.

As a presenter and radio host, Christina has made a mark in the entertainment world. She hosted her own TV show, VIPUnlocked, which aired on Sky TV and MTV Base Africa. She has conducted interviews with numerous artists and professionals from various industries. Alongside her hosting career, Christina also engages in artist and repertoire (A&R) work and handles marketing for several top artists within the music industry.

Being an on-air personality (OAP) brings Christina immense joy, particularly through meeting and connecting with new people. Before presenting a speech, she ensures thorough preparation. Extensive research is a crucial aspect, followed by mapping out the desired flow of the content.

Reflecting on her career, there was a standout moment for Christina when she attended her first red carpet event. Surrounded by glamour, flowing champagne, and esteemed celebrities, she realized she had reached a milestone in her life.

Throughout her journey, Christina has encountered setbacks that, in retrospect, turned out to be advantageous. The initial frustrations of hearing “no” in her early career now serve as valuable lessons, as she recognizes that she was not fully prepared for those opportunities at the time.

Regarding the importance of music marketers, Christina highlights their indispensable role in amplifying musicians’ reach. A fresh perspective and expert guidance are often necessary to bring forth the full potential of an artist’s vision.

During her spare time, Christina finds solace in relaxation, enjoying shows and a glass of wine while minding her own business. Describing herself in one word, she embraces the label “ambitious.”

When asked to describe life in one word, Christina playfully responds with “litty,” reflecting her vibrant and energetic approach to living.

In envisioning a dinner party, Christina would extend invitations to iconic figures such as Rihanna, Oprah Winfrey, Edward Enninful (Head of Vogue UK), Detavio (Head of Revolt TV), and Kris Jenner.

Within the music industry, Christina believes professionals are making a difference by shaping culture, challenging narratives, opening doors for others, and disseminating valuable information. Her own achievements include providing platforms for Ghanaian artists to showcase their music through collaborations with networks like MTV Base. Christina has also worked with prominent Afrobeat artists, amplifying their sound and breaking barriers. Collaborations with labels such as Universal and Def Jam have led to artist signings. Furthermore, her involvement with festivals like Afrochella aims to educate industry professionals on structuring themselves as businesses. Christina has also participated in panel discussions to educate aspiring individuals.

Looking ahead, in the next four years, Christina aspires to become a household name in the entertainment industry. She envisions hosting her own shows, continuing to engage in significant panel discussions, collaborating with diverse artists, and elevating the industry to new heights.
